Episode 2 - The process of building a successful website

Gideon van der Merwe, Julian Labuschagne

In this episode, we talk about the process behind building a successful website and what happens in each phase.

We first talk about the communication between a client or website owner and the website designer. This is where the website owner needs to communicate the vision of the website and the content that will be on the website to the website designer. We talk about the preparation and planning phase before a website is built.

The next step in the process is designing a layout or wire-frame, and we talk about the importance of understanding where the content and information needs to be placed and displayed on the website. This is a representation of where to content is going to reside on your website. There is no design elements or style in this phase, it only has to do with which information is placed where and what the meaning behind the content placement is.

Thereafter, we talk about the mockup phase where the client or website owner can see how the website will look like. We focus on style and design, fonts, images, and colors. This is again a conversation between the designer and the website owner. The website owner will have the option to suggest changes, and the website designer will provide the client with different concepts.

We then talk about the development phase, where the website is built exactly according to the design mockup. We also test the website on different browsers.

We have talked to many clients who never understood that a website needs to be built in this way and never had this experience. In the end, it all comes down to thinking and planning before building.
