Episode 4 - Why mobile is important for your website

Gideon van der Merwe, Julian Labuschagne

In this episode, we talk about the reasons why mobile is important for your website and also give some useful tips to look out for when catering for a mobile experience on your website.

We talk about why you should care about mobile. The first thing we need to look at is the analytics. In most cases, if we look at our customers’ websites, about 70% of customers come from mobile devices. Almost a third of the entire world are actively using their phones every day.

Mobile is always the most hands-on tech. It’s convenient and it’s always on you or within 3 meters of range. A phone is a gateway to information, in the palm of your hand.

Search engines prefer and promote mobile-friendly websites. You will score higher and your website’s search engine ranking will improve when your site is optimized and renders correctly on mobile. AMP pages are also a new type of mobile page that Google is promoting.

A lot of people designed a website for mobile but they did not properly test or design it and did not think about the user experience. Sometimes, we see responsive websites that still breaks on certain pages on mobile. Your website might run on Bootstrap or Zurb foundation, but that does not mean your website functions properly on mobile. Buying a theme template online is not always a great idea since your content was not considered when designing that theme.

Many people think of mobile as an afterthought. Mobile should be the most important thing and should be your main focus.

Check out the list on this article for some tips on how to optimise your website for mobile devices.

If you have a website that is only partially working on mobile and was not properly designed for a mobile experience, rather start thinking about building the website from scratch. Get a web developer and designer who can help you. In the end, it will cost you less to rebuild the website than to fix it every time it breaks.
